Why Humility Is Important, College Guide

When you are studying in the university, most of the things that you will learn are based on theories and principles. That’s good. However, if you want to be genuinely successful and happy in life, you must also practice humility. This is a topic that is not commonly discussed when you study in college, but it could have a great effect on your life in general.

What is Humility?

When we say humility, it means that you are humble, and that you don’t think of yourself as higher than the others. Some might think that this is a negative quality.

But you have to look at it from a different perspective. Arrogance is the complete opposite of humility. When you’re arrogant, you think that you are always better. And if that’s the case, you leave no room to learn more things.

On the other side of the spectrum, if you are humble, you will always leave room for improvement. That’s because your mindset is geared towards growth.

Let’s say you’ve already earned your degree and you got the job. If you are not humble enough, you would always think that your proposals are better than your colleagues. You won’t even listen to them. You won’t welcome their suggestions. And before you know it, you are just stagnant. And that’s precisely the reason why you cannot go up the corporate ladder

With humility, you are always open to criticisms and you always want to improve.

How Do You Develop Humility?

If you do not have an idea how to be humble or to develop humility, we have here a number of steps that you could follow. As early as now, you have to practice it. Eventually, you’re going to reap the rewards and you would be able to become more successful in the future.

Know Your Strength And Weakness

You have to remember that we have our own strengths and weaknesses. It’s always good to identify both sides if you want to practice humility.

Being confident in what you are good at can help other people, as long as you share it genuinely. But if you also know your shortcomings, and you acknowledge these, you are more than willing to learn new things from those who are better than you.

If you are not aware of your strengths and weaknesses, and if you don’t know how to reflect on yourself, you can start asking other people. It’s also a good practice because you are welcoming feedbacks and again, that’s another characteristic of being humble.

Don’t Be Afraid To Ask Questions

Most of the time, we are afraid to ask questions because we have this thinking that asking questions is only for dumb people. But that’s a misconception.

The more that you ask, the more that you can learn. Use this as an advantage and as a stepping stone to be a better person.

If someone is good at a particular craft, don’t be afraid to reach out to them and ask for their techniques. A confident person will always share their secrets so that others can be good at it too. If they don’t, then don’t take it personally. It’s just a personal preference that you just have to let go of.

Try To Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone

You will never know your strengths and weaknesses if you are always in your comfort zone. And if that’s the case, it’s harder to practice humility.

What you need to do right now is to expose yourself out there. Try different things which are included in your bucket list. Think about extremes like going on skydiving or travelling on your own. Why not go to a movie house by yourself? Again, humility is anchored to having a growth mindset. To experience more things means you are willing to learn.

It’s Not An Overnight Success

You have to remember that being humble or practicing humility is not an overnight success. Sometimes, it could take you several months to get used to it. It’s a habit that you have to form, and that is why we highly encourage you to do it as early as possible.

You’re fortunate enough to have found this post. At least you are already on the right track.
