Why Downsizing Is Important For College Students

As college students, you might want to downsize your life. But what do we mean by this?

In this context, downsizing means simplifying your choices or lifestyle. We know that right now, you could be tempted to buy the most expensive gadgets or the latest trends. But it’s also a great time for you to realize that downsizing can give you a lot of benefits.

If you are still not convinced, we recommend that you finish this entire post.

You Will Be Forced To Clean Up

When you downsize, you try to remove unnecessary things in your life. And that means you will have no choice but to declutter.

Start by looking at your closet. What are the things that you can let go of or even sell? What are the things that matter most to you?

For someone who’s studying in college and are about to go to the corporate world, we recommend that you leave your formal clothes with you. But if you have clothes that seem not to be age-appropriate, then you might want to let it go.

The same goes for your shoes, bags, books, and even toys. If you think you’re not going to use it, then why are you still holding onto it?

You Get To Be More Organized

When you have lesser things, it’s also easier to organize your stuff. In fact, you do not have to store it in a box where you will not see it for years. Everything will have its place, and everything will be used.

Just imagine how amazing your life could get if the things around you have its own purpose.

You Can Get Extra Cash

If you can sell some of your items, that means more money will go into your pocket. Who doesn’t want that, right? And if you are smart enough, you wouldn’t waste that money on useless things or activities. Instead, you’re going to invest it. Maybe you can start a small business, or you can ask experts how you can grow your money.

There are a lot of opportunities waiting there for you and as a young adult, it’s the perfect time to start now.

You Spend Less In Utilities And Other Bills

One of the ways you can downsize is to choose a smaller apartment. Think about it. You will spend most of your time at school. There’s no need to have a grand space for you to stay at night.

If you can live in a dormitory, then that’s good.

What’s amazing about this choice is that you also slash your utility and other bills. And that means, more money to save.

You Get To Be Creative

As you move to a smaller apartment, you try to be more creative when it comes to space. You try to maximize every corner so that your things will fit, and at the same time, it will not look cramped.

You might not realize it, but it’s also a great way to practice your creativity and resourcefulness. And who knows if you have the talent for it? Maybe you can become an interior designer one day.

It’s Liberating

One of the key learnings when you downsize is that you will realize that you don’t need a lot to be happy. You only need to keep the things that matter to you the most.

While abundance is mostly a good thing, we also have to embrace contentment. And that is something that a lot of people do not practice. We are always in this race where we want to get more, that we forget what we have.

How To Start Downsizing

Quite frankly, this is not easy, most especially if you’ve been used to living with so much stuff in your life. So the first step is to have self-awareness. Try to evaluate your life.  What really makes you happy? What are the things that are just mere decoration and have little to no value?

Let’s be clear here. We are not saying that you have to say goodbye to little luxuries in life. Of course, you need those. But what we are trying to say is that you need to know what is important to you and what you need right now.

Remember this. Right after college, you won’t be able to have millions of dollars immediately. You need to stretch your budget. And by downsizing as early as now, that would come naturally in the future.
