What Are The Worst Morning Habits For College Students

We are all guilty of this, but let’s admit that waking up early in the morning is very hard. There is something about the soft, squishy pillows that makes it very relaxing. But it is a habit that everyone should be changing as it affects your overall focus and productivity throughout the day. In this article, we would discuss some of the worst morning habits for college students.

The Snooze Button Is Not Your Ally

When you hear your alarm go off, what is the first thing you do? You turn to your buddy, the snooze button. But how can sleeping an extra 5 minutes affect you?

According to studies, when you hit the snooze button, you’re wasting 4 hours worth of productive time. Ever felt a bit dazed after sleeping for a few extra minutes? A human sleep cycle takes 90 minutes. When you press snooze and sleep again, your body then resets and starts on another cycle. As soon as you wake up,  it causes sleep inertia.

Sleep inertia is a physiological state wherein your cognitive and sensory-motor performance are reduced. This state usually lasts between 30 minutes up to 4 hours. This is the reason why there are times that you feel groggy in your 7 am class even though you have complete hours of sleep.

Starting Your Day With A Gadget

These first two habits would definitely hit most of us. After pressing that snooze button, this is what most people do.

Nowadays, people use phones as an alarm, which makes it logical that the next thing they do is check on their phone. They check who sent a message or what is happening in their social media accounts. It may sound harmless, but what it does is that it forces your brain to process a lot of information immediately. Imagine trying to get into a game without any warm-ups. The same thing is what’s happening to the brain. It should be given time to wake up slowly, just like a computer trying to boot up when you turn it on.

Also, dwelling on your social media accounts wastes your time. You don’t realize that you have wasted 15 to 30 minutes when you could have at least prepared yourself for school. You have the whole day to do all sorts of activities, including checking your phone. It wouldn’t hurt if you could leave your morning free from distraction.

Not Creating A Positive Mindset

Oftentimes, people tend to do things just for the sake that they have to. As a college student, you start your morning thinking that it would just be the same class and there is no need to exert any effort. This is the reason why some students become unmotivated and end up feeling bad and exhausted.

Start your day by creating a positive mindset. Whatever challenge you may be facing, tell yourself that you can surpass it. Have a goal in mind and keep that picture clear in your head. It won’t take that much of your time, but the impact it would give would last a lifetime.

Not Eating Healthy

More often than not, people tend to spend time longer in bed. Because of this, they don’t have enough time to prepare a quality breakfast or do some morning exercise. There is an old saying that health is wealth, which is true. You need to be healthy to be able to do everything on your checklist.

Starting The Day With Coffee

Now, some may argue that coffee is part of a breakfast meal, so what is wrong with it? Drinking coffee in the morning is not bad, only if it is not the very first thing you take. Your body becomes dehydrated when you sleep, and coffee is a known diuretic, so it tends to promote further dehydration. It would be better if you start with a glass of water as soon as you wake up. It would also help you avoid stomach issues such as acid reflux.

Some students tend to relax and wait for the deadline before they start working on important things. This is a habit that you need to take away.

Start your mornings by listing down all the important things you need to do. Start with the things that can be easily done, then progress to those that take a bit more time. Break down your tasks into more manageable items, which makes finishing it easier.

Sometimes it is hard to change habits, especially if you have been doing it for the longest time. But remember, it is never too late to change. What you just need is the willingness to do it.
