The pros and cons of taking an online statistics class.

There are certain classes that students prefer to take online and others that they prefer to take in person. If you are considering taking a college statistics course, you might be tempted by the idea of taking that class online. Below are a few of the best reasons to take - and to avoid - choosing the online version of a statistics class.

Pros

Self-Pacing Courses

One of the best reasons to take any kind of online course is the fact that most students can typically pace themselves. Teachers set an assignment due date, but it is generally up to the student to decide when to complete those assignments. This is especially useful for those who work long hours or who have unusual schedules, as they can choose to complete assignments when it is most convenient for them. Though there are definitely some classes that have more stringent schedules, the flexibility that comes with an online class really cannot be beaten.

More Meaningful Assignments

One of the real benefits of an online class is that they tend to get rid of a lot of the busy work. While there will almost certainly be a good deal of homework for a statistics class, most online professors do tend to limit the amount of extra work simply because it’s a little harder to deal with such assignments online. Given that online classes tend to be favored by those who are trying to get through school on their own schedules, most professors tend to make sure that each assignment actually counts.

Cons

No Face-to-Face Connections

One thing that can be difficult about any type of online class is that you won’t get much face time with the professor. While this is great for those who are strong at math or who tend to be self-motivated learners, it can be much more difficult for those who need extra support. If you choose to take a class online, you’ll need to be sure that you can handle the work on your own and that you are also willing to reach out to your professor electronically whenever you run into a problem. This is one issue that can generally be lessened if you are taking a class online from a university close to home, though you can’t always count on online professors to have the kind of availability that you might expect.

No Study Groups

Many student choose to work with others in order to improve their own performance in class. If you are the type of student who needs support from classmates, taking an online course might not be for you. While it is possible to form online study groups, it’s much harder to make the kind of connections that you would make in person. Some online statistic classes do assign study groups to students, but these groups don’t typically provide for the same kind of accountability that you’d get from an in-person group.

Whether or not an online statistics course is right for you is going to come down to the type of learner that you are. If you are self-motivated, want to go at your own pace and you want to avoid the bulk of the busy work that comes with some on-campus courses, it might be a good fit for you. If you want to work with others or you think you might need extra support, you might find this sort of class a bit harder than expected. As long as you know what you’re getting into, though, you can find ways to become successful in any online course.
