Make Your College Dorm Room Perfect for Sleeping

College can be excruciating. That’s a fact. So imagine yourself going back to your dormitory that is not conducive for sleeping. Tell us, how are you going to recharge for the next day? You see, properly designing your dorm is not limited to its aesthetic appeal. You must consider its function and if it is comfortable enough to sleep soundly at night.

In this post, we will share some of the top techniques on how you can make your dorm room perfect for sleeping. That way, you can regain the strength you need to face another brain-draining lecture the next day.

Bring a Piece of Your Own Bedroom

If adjusting to a new place is hard for you, why not redecorate your dorm room to something similar to what you have at home. You can use the same brand of linens, the same pillows, and comforters. Put the same lamp you are using at home. Decorate it in such a way that you’d feel a sense of familiarity. Of course, nothing beats the real thing but doing this is a step closer.

Declutter Your Bed

Some college students are used to doing practically everything on their bed. They study, they eat, they read books. However, experts recommend avoiding doing other things on your bed, aside from sleeping. Otherwise, it would be harder for your body to automatically condition itself when it’s time to sleep.

Designate a place to study. Or have a chair if you want to read books. And of course, try not to eat on your bed. Just imagine all the crumbs that might fall onto it. It’s just too unhygienic. And yes, ants might crawl as you sleep.

Communicate with Your Roommates

Most college students living in a dorm have roommates, and it is a must to consider their personal preference too. Discuss your house rules such as visiting hours and even the chores.

If you plan to redecorate the room, ask for your roommate’s opinion. If you have opposing taste, then we suggest dividing the space where each of you can showcase your style.

While it is always better to have a friend as your roommate, it doesn’t work that way. You will be assigned to a room with a stranger, and you need to consider adjusting for them as well. Remember, it is important that you both respect your privacy.

Just in case your roommate does not take these rules seriously, and your life is already affected, you can always ask for a replacement. Or you can transfer rooms. But of course, make sure that your reasons are valid.

Invest in Sleeping Accessories

If you have a roommate who loves to stay awake all night with lights open, it is a must-have to wear an eye mask and earplugs. That way, you can still get a good night’s sleep. In addition, you may also hang curtains around your bed as this could add privacy. You can get ready-made ones, and these are easy on the budget. We recommend investing in these items.

Establish a Healthy Sleep Routine

As much as possible, follow a sleep routine. Make sure that you go to bed at the same time every night. The same thing applies to waking up. You need to be consistent.

If you have a lot of thoughts and have a hard time sleeping, then drinking a glass of milk might help. We don’t encourage you to take sleeping pills unless it is prescribed by a professional.

Bring Nature into Your Room

There are a lot of good indoor plants which are low-maintenance. These are known to purify the air, and it can absorb toxins, making your sleep worthwhile.

Plus, there are essential oils that could help you get better sleep. Researchers found out that lavender can slow our heartbeat, and it relaxes muscles. That way, you will feel energized the next morning.

Getting enough quality sleep can protect our mental health, physical health, and overall quality of life. Healthy sleep is essential to excellent learning and memory function. New research has revealed that sacrificing sleep to study doesn’t help college students succeed academically. Having said that, take time to redecorate your dorm and always ensure to have proper rest.
