Life Skills College Students Should Master

If you’ve been reading some of our posts, you should know by now that we encourage college students to learn more things outside of their curriculum. You shouldn’t drown yourself in books, theories, and principles. Because at the end of the day, life skills matter.

But, have you ever wondered what are the life skills that college students should know? If you want to learn more, this post is perfect for you.

Do Your Laundry

You are fortunate enough that there are a lot of laundromats near campuses, so that’s an easy one for you. But you know what’s better? It’s if you know how to hand wash some of your clothes.

What if you don’t have enough funds to go to the laundromat? You will have no choice but to wash your clothes.

The next question would be, is it going to be challenging?  Well, it’s going to be hard at first. But once you get the hang of it, you will realize that you can save a lot of money just by doing it.

Prepare Your Meals

Clearly, there are a lot of restaurants and fast-food chains where you can easily get your meals. But in the long run, that could be costly. Not to mention, most of their selections are unhealthy.

As college students, you must know how to prepare your food, and it has to be healthy. You have to learn how to budget your money for groceries and be able to see which items would do you good.

Once again, you are lucky enough to live in this era because there are a lot of recipes you can find online. Some are even quick recipes you can do in just 10 minutes. That means, it shouldn’t eat up a lot of your time. You can still study your lessons and at the same time, ensure that what you will eat are beneficial for your health.

Getting Used to Public Transportation

Even if you have your own car, it would still be beneficial if you know how to use public transportation. This includes the bus and train.

Knock on wood, but what if your car suddenly broke down? What are you going to do if you need to rush to school because you have your finals exam? To save some time, take the train. You would be surprised how much time you can save just by doing this. Plus, you can stretch your budget because you don’t have to pay for gas.

Learn How To Manage Your Time

Unfortunately, you cannot use your go with the flow mantra when you step into the university. It’s the stage in your life where you have to learn time management skills. You will have a lot on your plate and if you’re not going to prioritize your tasks, you might miss a lot of deadlines.

If you are not comfortable writing your plans in your notebook or a traditional planner, you can always use your gadgets so you can be more organized. Google Calendar should work just fine, but there are other apps that are focused on making you more productive. You can also try those as well.

Interpersonal Skills

Maybe you enjoy your time alone in your dorm. You feel that it’s way better than to mingle with people in your university. That’s a personal choice, and it’s fine. However, you have to remember that your college life could be the perfect time to meet people and to form a network. This network could help you as you look for jobs or as you establish your own empire.

Remember this. You do not have to be best friends with everyone. But it’s also good if you form good relationships with them. Take note that you have to be genuine when forming relationships. If people see that you’re just trying to make connections for your own gainthen they will repel you eventually.

When we say interpersonal skills, this also includes how you communicate with other people. It’s time that you hone that skill as early as now. It’s not just about speaking confidently. You also need to listen properly. You have to understand how it is to be assertive and to practice empathy.

These things are not taught in school and you can only fine-tune these skills if you expose yourself out there.
