How to Pack Light When Studying Overseas

How to Pack Light When Studying Overseas

Studying overseas can be exciting. Apart from academics, you get to learn about the culture and gain brand new experiences. And as you step into a new adventure, it could be tempting to bring your entire closet. After all, you’d never know when you will need it.

But obviously, that’s not practical considering that there might be additional costs for extra baggage. Plus, it would be harder to bring all your things back home. Think about souvenirs and presents for your friends. How are you supposed to fit them all? So the question now is, how are you going to pack light if you are about to study overseas?

We talked to several exchange students, and they shared the tips they swear by.

Check the Country’s Climate

It pays to do your research before packing your stuff. So the first thing you have to consider is the country’s climate or weather. Is it going to be summer? Or do you have to pack thick coats?

Fortunately, a quick search in Google can already guide you. Or, if you are more comfortable using apps, we recommend 1Weather.

Understand the Local Culture

It is also crucial that you know the local culture and practices. As much as you want to wear your tank tops and shorts, it might not be appropriate in some regions. We do understand that you want to express your own style. But you also have to pay respect. As they say and as cliche as this may sound, when in Rome, do what the Romans do.

Have a List and Pack Early

The earlier you pack, the better. Packing the night before your flight is not a good idea for many reasons. This can often result in getting unnecessary things. On the other hand, you might forget something essential.

Make your list and write down all the things you want to bring weeks before. As you go along, remove those items which you think you can survive without. You will be surprised how much space you can save just by doing that.

Get a Good Luggage

When we say good luggage, we don’t mean that you have to buy an expensive one. But make sure that it is of high quality and can fit all your essentials. Since you will do a lot of traveling, it has to be durable and can last for years. That way, you don’t have to purchase a new one after every semester.

Bring Clothes Good for 10 Days

If you will stay in a different country for one semester, most foreign students recommend that you pack clothes good for ten days. It should give you enough time to do your laundry every week. Even if you want to be fashionable all the time, always put comfort first.

The trick here is to choose versatile pieces that you can easily mix and match together. Once you already know which clothes to pack, you can use Ziplocs or vacuum bags to store it. Other seasoned travelers roll their clothes like sleeping bags too.

Bring some accessories as well if you want to add flavor to your wardrobe. But you have to make sure not to bring expensive jewelry. In fact, having your valuables is not recommended.

Choose Quality Footwear

As a rule of thumb, you need to bring three pairs of quality shoes or sandals. Make sure that you have one for walking, for extensive activities, and for more formal occasions. It’s always a good investment to buy quality shoes that can withstand long usage.

Don’t Forget Your Gadgets

When you pack your things, have a space for your gadgets. This includes your laptop, tablet, camera, and of course, your smartphone. Plus, don’t forget your charger. We’ve met a lot of college students buying new chargers just because they left it at home. The quality ones are quite costly, so ensure that you have it. If you need to buy sleeves and additional protection, then get that as well.

Pack Travel-Sized Toiletries

Some people will say it’s useless to bring toiletries because you can easily buy them overseas. But it would help if you have travel-sized ones. You’ll never know if there will be delays. At least you still have something to use even for a couple of days.

Don’t Forget Your Prescriptions and Medications

Lastly, you might have medications that you need to bring overseas. Before you leave, check if you are allowed to do so. Asking for your doctor’s prescription is also necessary.
