How To Become A Morning Person
Some people prefer working late at night. They prefer the quiet environment, not to mention there are less distractions when you are working during those times. The problem with this habit is that as a college student, most of your activities are during day time. Yes, you may be able to accomplish your homework, but at the expense of feeling sleepy and tired the next morning. Your body may be wired as a night person, but there are things you can do to change all of this.
If you want to change that habit, here are some tips on how you can become a morning person.
Early To Bed, Early To Rise
The first thing you need to do to adjust your body clock is to change your sleeping habit. This is not a one-time process as you have to do it gradually over a certain period.
According to experts, you need to move your sleeping time roughly 2 hours earlier than usual. Then once done, adjust it earlier until you reach the time wherein you will have the required number of sleeping hours before you wake up in the morning.
Adjust Your Body’s Inner Clock
Your body has a built-in body clock. It uses light to determine whether it needs to sleep or wake up. Melatonin, also known as the “sleep hormones, “are released when you see sunset-colored lights. On the other hand, your body reacts the opposite when you see dawn related lights.
You can use this physiological event to your advantage. Try to use lights that would imitate the color of sunset to make you feel sleepy at night. On the other hand, keep your gadgets away as these emit blue lights, which resemble the light in the morning. This is the reason why it’s hard to get some sleep when you are using your phone.
Change Your Eating Habits
Based on a study, most evening people tend to skip their breakfast and consume too much alcohol and caffeine in their diet. If you prefer becoming a morning person, then it is advised that you change your eating habits as well. Try to eat foods that would promote better sleep. Eat more vegetables and avoid eating large amounts of food near your sleeping time. Take your dinner a few hours earlier to help you sleep on time.
A study conducted on a number of participants showed that exercising does help in changing the chronotype of a person. When they exercise, it advances their time of sleeping, therefore helping them change from an evening person to a morning person.
As a start, it doesn’t matter whether you exercise in the morning or at night but as soon as your sleeping pattern changes, try keeping your exercise routine early in the morning.
Avoid Taking Afternoon Naps
This affects your sleeping pattern as it makes it harder for you to sleep at night. As much as possible, keep yourself awake during the afternoon. Do something productive that would keep you busy as well. Or perhaps, schedule your workout session. That way, your body would not force you to take that afternoon rest.
Induce A Relaxing And Sleep Friendly Environment
Another way to make you change your sleeping habit is to create a sleepy vibe in your bedroom.
Try to make your bed as comfortable as possible. Set it up in a way that you cannot resist going to sleep. Create a soothing nighttime routine such as deep breathing, aromatherapy, play soft music, do gentle stretches or anything that could make you feel sleepy.
These would create a relaxing night time which would encourage your body to start your sleep cycle at an earlier time.
Becoming a morning person has its benefits. It allows you to accomplish more things throughout the day.
Changing your habit is no easy task, especially if you have been doing it for the longest time. That is why if you want to change, you need to have the right mindset. You need to discipline yourself and resist any temptation that you may encounter. Be patient, and sooner or later, you will notice that you are becoming a morning person.
