Effects Of COVID-19 On Healthcare Professionals

Yes, we are all affected by the pandemic. However, if one sector is drastically affected by COVID-19, it would be the healthcare industry. This post will give you a glimpse of the actual effects of the virus on the lives of our healthcare professionals. That way, you get to appreciate what they do for us and their sacrifices.

Our Healthcare Workers Feel During The Pandemic

Let’s take a look at the current situation of our unsung heroes.

They Are Physically Exhausted

This is an obvious one but many of us do not clearly see how exhausted our healthcare professionals are in these trying times. Every day they have to accommodate multiple COVID-19 patients. Some of them do not get enough sleep. They have to walk for hours and attend to their patients’ needs. They also need to be on the lookout if something goes wrong. It’s as if there is no time to rest.

And since they are always on-the-go, skipping meals has become the norm.

They Are Mentally Tired

Being a healthcare professional is never easy. After all, they are always after saving lives. During this pandemic, there is too much information that we need to absorb. For ordinary people, knowing the precautions or how you can protect yourself from the virus is enough. But for them, the case is different. They need to understand everything about COVID-19 so they can efficiently help those who are in need.

Learning that amount of information in just a short period can be exhausting. Just try to imagine yourself studying for an exam in college, only 1,000x harder.

They Are Emotionally Drained

It’s understandable that many people try to keep their distance whenever they see healthcare professionals. However, some have gone overboard. They make our healthcare professionals feel that they are disgusted. That mere look is already embarrassing. We encourage to practice more empathy whenever we see healthcare workers.

They Don’t Have Time To Grieve

At the height of the pandemic, there were also a lot of deaths reported. In most of these cases, no family members are allowed to see their departed loved ones. Only the healthcare professionals have witnessed the last breath, which no one is ever used to. And with the massive number of deaths recurring every day, healthcare practitioners do not have the time to grieve.

As they say, they are always in power mode trying to save lives. They are not given enough time to react like humans.

What Can We Do?

You do not need to have a grand gesture just to show your appreciation to our frontline workers, especially the healthcare professionals. Your simple ways can help ease the pain.

Thank Them Whenever Possible

If you’ve seen a healthcare practitioner, don’t forget to say “thank you” even if they are strangers. Just acknowledging their efforts can brighten up their day.

Ask Them How They Are

Perhaps, we’ve been too busy protecting ourselves that we forget to ask others how they are doing. If you know someone who works at the hospital or similar facilities, send them a message.

As much as possible, don’t interrogate them or ask for insider news about COVID-19. All the information you need is on the news or online. Let’s just say, give them a break.

Send Or Donate Essential Items

Another bright idea is to send them food or other essential items. Bigger companies are donating equipment to hospitals. Of course, as college students, most do not have that amount of money. That doesn’t mean you can’t help!

You can send them food and other basic items. If you have neighbors who are healthcare workers, you can leave a basket of fruits at their doorstep.

Stay At Home

Lastly, you can help our healthcare practitioners by following the health protocols. Just stay at home if there’s no need to go outside and live a healthy lifestyle. That way, you can recover from the comforts of your own home just in case you get sick.

We’ve seen a lot of news and videos of people getting impatient with our healthcare professionals. But you have to remember that this battle is not their own. It’s the entire population’s. Instead of bickering, let’s help them uplift their spirits.
