Don’t Be Broke, Practical Guide For University Students

Apart from the challenging courses or subjects that you have to pass in college, there is another big problem that most college students face. And that’s getting broke. If you are one of them, don’t be embarrassed. A huge percentage of the population experience the same. But that doesn’t mean you can’t do anything about it. In fact, there are practical ways on how you can avoid getting broke. The best ones are listed below.

Look for Free Things

There are a lot of university activities where you get freebies. Aside from a good network, they offer study materials, depending on the group you plan to join. And yes, they also provide free snacks in some of their meetings. So, it’s always a good thing to do your research, go around, and look for similar activities where you can learn, and at the same time, get food.

Use Your Student ID

Did you know that your student ID has a lot of perks? Many establishments will honor your student ID and will give you discounts. You can go to the movies or eat at the restaurant for a fraction of the cost. In fact, you can buy clothes cheaper than the original price. Now, that’s being smart.

Write Down Your Monthly Expenses

If you think you are always losing money before the month ends, it’s about time that you sit down and try to understand your monthly budget. How much do you have, and how much are you spending? You can use an app to monitor your expenditures, create an excel file, or do it by hand. The most important thing is that you list down everything.

When you already have the list, check which items are unnecessary and those you can live even if you don’t buy it. Perhaps you have an expensive gym membership fee that you don’t even maximize. Or maybe you are always eating out. Evaluate your lifestyle and downgrade as much as possible.

Sell Your Old Items

If you have old books, you can always offer it to other students. If you must know, they are also looking for second-hand books as these are generally cheaper. Also, you can clear up your closet and remove the clothes which you don’t regularly use. Post it on eBay, and you would be surprised how fast it will be gone.

Get A Job Or Start A Business

Probably the smartest thing you can do to avoid being broke is to have a job or start your own business venture. Fortunately, there are a lot of opportunities online where you can earn. The best part is that you don’t need to leave your dormitory to do so.

On the other hand, you can start with businesses that are considered low risk. How about starting your online clothing business? Or if you have the talent to cook healthy meals, you can offer it to your dormmates. There are several opportunities you can look into. You just need to be creative, have the will to do it, and be determined.

Avoid Using Your Credit Card

Never use your credit card unless it is an emergency. Take note that a huge discount for that expensive pair of shoes isn’t considered one. When you are going out with your friends, make sure to bring cash if you need to buy something. Having a card with you can result in over-spending.

Grow Your Own Food

If possible to have a small indoor vegetable garden, then do so. At least you won’t need to spend extra to buy food. Many people are doing this already, and apart from saving money, they are now healthier. Now, isn’t that something you can take advantage of?

In line with this, it’s about time that you know how to prepare your meals. Food is considered the most expensive commodity, and if you always rely on restaurants and fast foods, it can eat up a huge chunk from your budget. Learn how to prepare simple sandwiches and salads from now on.

Choose Your Circle

Peer-pressure is real. We are not saying that you shouldn’t be friends with people who are rich. However, you should also meet students who are frugal. That way, you can adapt their techniques and be able to budget your money the best way possible.
