College Student’s Guide To A Proper Night’s Rest

Getting a proper night’s rest is important, especially if you are a college student. College life is very tiring as you need to accomplish a lot of things in a short period of time. You have to work on your school deadlines, not to mention other extracurricular activities you engaged in. 

According to a recent study, every night that you don’t sleep well results in a GPA drop of 0.02 and increases the chance of you dropping the subject by 10%. That is serious. 

There are many factors that affect your sleeping habit and most of them hinder you from getting the full hours of sleep you need. Now, here are some tips to help you get that proper night’s rest.

Gradually Make The Change

Some people tend to function differently from others. There are students who prefer doing things late, while some prefer it the other way around. It is hard to force your body to do something that is not natural to it. 

To make it work, you need to slowly adjust the activities you do to make you sleep better at night. This is not a one-day transition so it is best to do it gradually to let your body adjust naturally. Sooner or later, you’ll be surprised that you are starting to get well rested and become more energetic the following morning. 

Create A Regular Routine

Your body tends to adjust itself according to your routine. Changing it every now and then confuses the body, making it difficult for it to adapt. That is why you feel tired when you sleep at different times as it doesn’t know if it needs to switch to rest or active state. 

To avoid this, try setting a regular time for your sleep and do it consistently every day. Create a schedule for your wake-up time as well. This will allow your body to set the natural rhythm for when it’s time to rest and wake up, giving you the energy you need come daytime.

Get That Sunshine In Your Body

As soon as you wake up, make it a point that you don’t stay in bed. Try to get out as quickly as possible. Your body has a tendency to react to light, and natural lights tell your body that it needs to wake up. By doing this, your body is automatically adjusting itself, enabling you to perform all your activities. This would prevent you from feeling tired and making you sleep at the wrong time of the day.

Create A Relaxing Sleeping Environment

Set up the mood in your bedroom and make it comfortable that you will be able to relax. Keep your bed clear of things that might distract your sleep. You could also add a scent in your room that would relax you. Bamboo and lavender are good relaxing scents that could help create the perfect sleeping atmosphere. 

Schedule An 8-Hour Sleeping Schedule

Your cellphone needs a certain amount of time to fully charge its batteries. The same thing goes with your body. It needs around 8 to 9 hours of sleep to fully recover. 

That is why it is imperative that when you schedule your sleeping and waking time, it should give you a total of at least 8 hours. A good tip is to make sure that you are tired enough to go to sleep. 

Trying to get sleep when you don’t feel tired makes you feel uneasy, resulting in your body associate your bed with stress. Make sure you do enough activities throughout the day to the point that you are tired enough come sleeping time.

Keep Your Gadgets Away

An hour before you go to bed, make sure that you do not use your gadgets. Relax and set the mood for you to sleep. 

Study shows that electronic gadgets such as phones make your body stay up longer than it should as it emits blue light which triggers the body to stay awake. The same effect goes into your lights. 

Keep your exposure to light as minimal as possible. If you can’t sleep with total darkness, opt for those night lights which give you just enough luminance without disrupting your sleep.

Getting a good night’s rest is very important as it is the only time that your body can recuperate the energy it lost. Trying to push your body to function for longer periods would take a toll and will affect your health in the future. Give your body a break and have a good night’s sleep, you deserve it.
