You’ve probably seen a lot of free resume templates online, and it’s always good to use these as guides. But you have to remember that the layout and style play secondary because what matters most is your resume’s content. It needs to include valuable experiences that will give your employer the idea that you are fit for the job. 

Now, how are you going to ensure that your resume is appealing? Here are some of the best tips. 

Join School Clubs

You might think that joining clubs is just a way to break a routine, but it is more than that. School organizations are also a way to improve skills that are beneficial when you work. For example, it teaches you how to manage your time. We all know that college life can be hectic, considering the term papers and examinations. And for you to be able to squeeze in time for extra-curricular activities means you know how to plot your schedule effectively. 

Also, as most of these clubs host events, you get to understand how to organize these. It allows you to become a team player, or in other cases, to lead a team. 

When you include your university clubs in your resume, be specific. Indicate your role and if possible, the success rate. For example, ‘we’ve managed to raise funds by 70% for our chosen charity by effectively promoting our organization’s annual event’.  

Take Online Courses

We know that you are already learning a lot from school. But that doesn’t mean you don’t have room for more. 

If you want to make your resume stand out from the rest, you can start getting more skills. Get a few online courses and start learning. Fortunately, there are hundreds of affordable classes to choose from.  Don’t forget to compile your certificates and show them when your hiring manager asks for it.

But don’t get courses just to fill in your CV. The important thing is that you genuinely gain skills that you can use at work. It’s really investing in yourself and the future.  

Attend Conferences and Conventions  

Going to industry conferences and conventions could also be advantageous for your resume. During these events, you get the latest updates and even meet people in the industry. This is a good venue to build a network. And if you do it right, these reputable people from the industry could be your reference persons in your CV. It definitely adds weight to it.    

Work Part-Time 

A lot of college students work part-time because of financial constraints. But did you know that it could also be advantageous for your resume? The good thing about our technology is that there are a lot of remote jobs available even for college students. You can try being a tutor or a writer. Imagine getting extra funds while making sure that you have an unfair advantage when looking for a job. 

Volunteering

Aside from working part-time, you can also do volunteering work for charities and other organizations. It’s not for your resume alone, but it is always good to take part in making your community a better place. It can also boost your social skills, knowing that you have to interact with strangers. We’ve heard a lot of stories where students just take on activities outside of the school so that they can add something on their CV. But ask yourself, where is the real value in that? Look for opportunities where you can gain different and substantial experiences.
