Let’s just say that you have an impressive resume. You spearheaded several events back in college, and you were a part of a well-known organization. Your grades are even above average, and it seems that you can get a job easily. Well, think again.

Dress the Part
Just so you know, your self-introduction starts even before you open your mouth. Thus, you have to make sure that you are well-dressed and you look ready for the job. This is not to the extent of being too flashy. Unless of course, you are applying in the fashion industry or the arts. But generally, wear something that leaves an impression that you are smart, confident, and serious about the role.
Be Conscious About Your Body Language
According to communication experts, body language speaks louder than words. Most of us are familiar with giving a firm handshake before the interview proper. But it takes more than a handshake to create an impact.
Think about subtle body movements such as clenching your fist or crossing your arms while talking. More often than not, your interviewer might perceive that you are hiding something. Make sure you understand these little gestures as well
Research About the Company Values
We understand that the article is about introducing yourself. And so you might wonder why we are suggesting that you research about the company.
This is important and should be a part of your preparation. You would want to know if your values are aligned with them and it’s always good if you include that during interviews. You have to know their culture, mission, and vision. In today’s age, this is not hard to do. A quick online search can give you answers.
Ask Others About Your Strengths
In some cases, you might be aware of your best assets in terms of work. But it is also possible that you are oblivious of other things you are good at. This is where you can ask for help. Talk to your family, friends, professors, and even your mentors about this. That way, you can also add to your introduction how others perceive you. At the same time, you can expound more on how these characteristics can be an asset to the company.
Do Not Memorize Your ‘Tell Me About Yourself’
It’s always good to prepare and to list down the things you need to share before your interview. But we encourage you not to memorize all the lines. The downside of doing so is that you will sound ‘robotic’ after saying the same spiels over time.
A better technique is to just list down talking points or a quick outline. Write down the things you are comfortable sharing with. If you love surfing or hiking, then go ahead and include those too.
Your interviewer would also like to hear about your personal life, most especially that you are a new graduate and you have little to no professional experience.
And when you speak, think about having a casual conversation. Humor is good too but make sure you don’t go as far as using colloquial terms.
Here’s a secret. Most HR practitioners do not have the time to read your entire resume. Harsh, but true. And so, you should be able to tell what’s in your resume the most exciting way. You don’t have to recite it but instead, make it more fluid. Tell a story of what transpired in each job role or experiences you’ve listed in your resume.
Do Not Fake It
Lastly, never fake your interview. We know that you want to sound perfect, but that should not be the case. Nowadays, people want authenticity, and they want genuine answers. They are not looking for a ‘templated’ response.
There’s no point in faking it. Just imagine if you get hired and they managed their expectations based on what you said during the interview. They will soon find out if you are not telling the truth.
